This week let’s meet Adam and Tracy, two hosts from New Zealand. They are renting the ”Little Love’s Retreat”, a peaceful self-contained guest house located in Invercargill.
Let’s meet them 🤩
So, Adam & Tracy, tell us, how long have you been hosting for? How and why did you start? How many properties do you manage?
We have been hosting since August 2020. We had friends staying in our guesthouse for nearly 3 years and when they left we didn’t want to look for long-term tenants. Hosting seemed like the logical choice.
Are you an owner or a manager? Is this a part-time or full-time occupation for you?
We are the owners of the accommodation. It’s a guest house on our property, so it’s just a part-time thing for us.
What is the best thing about hosting, and what are the biggest problems you face?
We love hosting as we get to meet people from all walks of life. But, it can be hectic to juggle work and cleaning the rooms.
What is one thing you wish you knew when you started hosting?
How much fun it is!
What is the most important advice/tip you would give someone interested in becoming a short-term rental host?
Besides Hosthub, are there any tools, devices, or software (eg. Remote keylocks, cameras, local guide apps, power meters, etc) you use? What is your experience with them?
We use a lockbox for self-check-in and check-out. We have also recently installed a “P Alert” alarm that works a bit like a smoke detector but it detects methamphetamine use. It gives us and our guests peace of mind that the unit isn’t contaminated by previous guests.
Which channels do you list on? How much has your revenue increased since listing on multiple channels?
We list on Airbnb, Booking.com, and bookabach (Vrbo), our bookings have doubled since listing on multiple channels.
Besides listing on multiple channels, what other things can a host do to increase his/her bookings and revenue?
Give your guests more than they expect. We have had many bookings from personal referrals from people that felt we offered exceptional value for money.
